Well, I just discovered a Microsoft Forum and they were discussing the new rollout today for Windows 8.1.  As you would expect, many are not pleased with it because it really doesn't solve the more important problems with 8/8.1.  Most of it are simple things, like a start screen and being able to pin apps to taskbar, putting the power icon on the new start screen and other minor features.  Some even have new problems with the new version.  Many suggested that Microsoft should come out with Microsoft 9 that fixes problems and sets it up so it is easier to maneuver.  So I guess I will wait a little longer before I d/l 8.1.  Thanks for letting me know about the rollout though.

Oh, and the updates, etc. that I get say they are for 8 and 8.1.

I don't think those people installed the update. All of my Windows machines received that 850MB 8.1 Spring update today, and...

  1. Absolutely no problems installing it
  2. Start Menu isn't back yet, but that is coming REALLY soon. They revamped the Start screen to organize it a bit more cleanly
  3. Apps CAN be pinned to the Taskbar. When the update is installed, the "Store" app will be pinned by default
  4. Power icon is on the Start screen. Sits right next to your name!

These screenshots are from a newly built computer, so things are kind-of vanilla at the moment, but if you look you can see most of those changes included.

Definitely install it. It's a little known fact that it's actually a part of your software license agreement to keep Windows patched for the sake of support. Since you're still on Win8 and will be doing an upgrade to 8.1, just take a backup of your files, first should something really go wrong. Given the number of machines that have upgraded already, you don't have much to worry about. Just run Disk Cleanup when it's all done to remove the old Windows 8 install from the hard drive (frees around 7-14GB of space!).

EDIT: I guess I misread your post. Sorry! :( Do you have a link to that thread? I know the biggest issue people have with Windows 8.1 happens to be the lack of Shadow Copy, and also the lack of a Start Menu, and finally the fact that Metro apps take up the entire screen (this will be fixed with the Start Menu update). Otherwise, everything else is, IMO, a big complaint fest. People did similar things when Windows XP was out and a pile of bugs, and when Vista brought some much needed changes (although a bit buggy until SP1).
