Love this idea. Question. Does the older router broadcast a different SSID or repeat the one from the Newer router?
I just answered your PM on this topic, but lets make as much info as possible public so here is what I said in the PM:
1) , No, I use two different SSIDs. I decided that was the simple way to do it for my specific environment. My laptop and Android devices (tablet and phone) and grandson's iPhone use the Rev. I at N speed (performance setting, no G support) and my son's old G-only laptop uses the old Actiontec. I just created a second SSID with a 2 after it. I chose this route primarily for simplicity and because the Rev. I provides perfectly acceptable N speeds throughout our house for our N devices. I did use the same passphrase for both routers with WPA2 encryption on both (no particular reason other than it makes remembering the single complex passphrase easier) .
2) The Actiontec Rev. I is single 2.4 band only, but with two antennas. I have not experienced any of the signal strength issues that others have complained about; I have the router set up in my Office at the North end of the house and the signal strength is perfectly fine at the South end, about 80 feet away through several walls (our house is single story without a basement, which makes things simple, might be different for other home layouts). Before you buy any antennas for either router I suggest you try the supplied antenna configuration, you may find like I did that it will work for you. Unfortunately I really can't give you any advice on antennas you might buy since I have not needed to get any.
