I read that Verizon is letting their peering points with Cogent get saturated, leading to problems with streaming Netflix. I have experienced these problems first-hand on my brand new FiOS connection (75/35) with speeds dropping to 400-600kbps at certain times of day.
Verizon is holding out for payment from Cogent because the traffic exchange is asymmetric. Clearly, netflix sends more traffic to FiOS customers than they receive in return.
However, this position is bogus. Here you have a paying (highly paying) customer, Verizon, and the demand for this traffic is coming from ME. You need to provide the service that I demand or I WILL switch ISPs. You should retain the settlement-free peering arrangement with Cogent, and provide as many 10Gbps ports as are demanded by your customers. Stop trying to play games and protecting your own VOD services. I am a loyal Netflix customer and they have the shows I want to watch. You are my ISP. Start acting like it and DO THE JOB I PAY YOU TO DO.
