Re: Gigabit questions before I commit to return to FIOS

Most likely you probably have the older ONT that doesn't support the Gig so they will come out upgrade that and run ethernet. But just to be safe it doesn't hurt to mention it.

Sometimes people complain on here about using VPN with the G1100 but if you will be internet only you can use the Orbi or any other router and don't even use the G1100 at all. I'm just assuming the DD-WRT can also be the primary or you put that on LAN side or router. Either way you won't need to use the G1100.

I use a variety of streaming services with the G1100 and a Ubiquiti router and never had any issues is years.

I'd try multiple speed test sites using different servers. If I use Ookla I get 10 different results with 10 different servers.

I've tried multiple servers on different sites. They're all SLIGHTLY different but no significant differences.

I know that I can switch the ONT from MoCA to ethernet.

I have the Actiontec Rev I.

Do you happen to know how much it costs to switch the ONT from MoCA to ethernet & is it something that I can do myself or do I need to have a tech come to my apartment?

Thanks for the input. I also went into my network properties and made sure my NIC is gigabit capable. It is. I'd be shocked if that was causing it as im using a new motherbaord. I will double check the cables to ensure they're not bent or crimped and run the test again

Untangled the Ethernet cable going from the router to my pc. The speeds haven't changed. Although, after looking at the cable going from the ONT to the router, maybe thats causing the problem. Here's a pic. Its the white cable. The tech installed white cable wrapped up the way you see it in the picture but since the speeds from the ont to the router seem fine, maybe thats not the problem. Idk. Kinda at a loss here. wire.jpg

The online form didn't work for me.  It failed mysteriously.  I tried the email address in the FAQs.  We'll see if that works.

Why didn't the online form work?  I don't know.  It seemed to require a number I didn't have.  Why was there noone to chat between 3:00 and 5:00 PM?  I don't know.  I kept calling Verizon numbers looking for help, and all I got was different music at different sites.

You can call up and ask them to change to ethernet. Nothing you can do on your own. Has to done on their end. However you will have to run the ethernet. If your comfortable doing that then there will be no charge.

From the photo which is upside down I am assuming you also have tv hence the coaxial

however the ethernet seems to not be plugged into the WAN port but into one of the LAN ports. 4 of them are black, 1 is a different color. (I don’t use the Quantum so it could be yellow or blue or even white)

that is where the ethernet from your ONT is to be set in. Not the lan ports.

after you plug your laptop or desktop into one of the 4 lan ports then run the test again. Hardwired and not via WiFi.

You could try all of them but it will never come close to verizons proprietary servers.

you get lower speeds because there are real world issues like failed hops, bad routing and congestion even overloaded servers all down the pipe.

that is why Verizon only accepts their test and no one else’s.

True that's why Verizon only accepts their test. But it is not true that their speed test is the only one that will give you correct results. There is at least 5 servers on Ookla that regularly use and always get good speeds. I'm just pointing out that not all servers are capable of testing a gig. Whether you use Ookla or whatever other site. Ookla will auto select a server and a lot of people don't to change it.

It is in the right spot. WAN is white one right above Coax port.  4 Yellows are LAN ports. They wouldn't even be routing if the ONT was plugged into a LAN port.

Verizon's customer service has always been horrible. When I first got Fios (years ago), I'd spend hours on the phone AT THE FIOS KIOSK, then be promised some discount or credit, only to never receive it. I tell people all the time..."you'll love the service (compared to Cox), but don't EVER have a problem with it!".

I have 2 set-top boxes- an HD DVR in the living room & an HD set-top box in the utility room. Both are connected by coax cable. If I change to ethernet then the router would be conected to the ONT by LAN cable instead of coax cable, right?

Is there any advantage to connecting to the ONT  via ethernet rather than coax?

Can the ONT connect wirelessly to both set-top boxes?

Yep a friend of mine on dsl reports sent me a link to the ookla gig test site.

although on verizons speed test (when I have to swap routers) it shows perfect speeds within that 940/880 and higher. On the other test sites I may average at 900/700 +/-

but I had 15/1 from Time Warner for over 20 years. So as long as it’s stable I have no complaint. 😀

If you have 2 STBs you still need coax connected to router even if you are on ethernet. The coax to router is how your STBs getting an internet connection for the guide/on demand.

If you do switch to ethernet it will go from ONT to the white WAN port on your router. Just leave coax connected for STBs. If you switch to TiVo it will also need coax on router since TiVo uses MOCA now too.

I guess the only advantage to being on ethernet is you can you any router. With coax you cannot. And you need ethernet to router if you get 150 mbps or above.

Right now Verizon doesn't offer wireless STBs.

Router Config - "This page can’t be displayed"

Hello, I'm having trouble accessing my router config page. When I type in the address (192.168.1.1) I get the following message:

This page can’t be displayed

  • Make sure the web address http://192.168.1.1is correct.
  • Look for the page with your search engine.
  • Refresh the page in a few minutes.

This is a new issue, I accessed my router config page this summer. Can anyone please point me in the right direction on how to resolve this?

Thanks!
