Need advise on Actiontec MI424WR Rev 1 and Actiontec WCB6200Q WiFi Extender

I have two routers that I purchased from Verizon.

My primary router has been an Actiontec Model MI424WR-GEN3I [Router 1]. When I expanded my office to a second floor I purchased a second router from Verizon an Actiontec WCB6200Q [Router 2] to extend the WiFI signal. This second router automatically took on the name of the primary router but added a suffix to the SSID.

My Mac computer recognizes both routers and will join either router 1 or router 2 using the same original password of [Router 1] for both. However, my Canon MX922 printer only recognizes the first router [Router 1]. I also have an iPad and iPhone 7 that recognize and will join [Router 2] but not [Router 1]. When I try to have these devices “join” router 1, they report that the password is incorrect. Since the iPad and iPhone are on router 2 (and will not join router 1), the air print function does not work for these devices.

Are there any firmware updates for these two routers?  (I contacted Actiontec support at their website and was informed that any firmware updates must be delivered by the ISP that sold me the devices.)

Secondly, is there an advantage to setting new and the same SSID and new but same password for the routers via admin name and password?

Will Verizon replace my router if I upgrade my Fios Gigabit Connection ?

Any other suggestions?

So the one WCB6200Q is just an extender not a router. So with that being said your devices are all on the same subnet so it seems weird that some devices connect and other do not.

The quantum router won't help since the WCB6200Q auto clones SSID and password. So even if you change to something else it will eventually change it back to what the router is.

Now the WCB6200Q has a 5ghz band where the Rev I does not. I would connect you printer to the 2.4 ghz(the SSID without 5G on the end) and also you iPhone and see if airprint will work. I have see issues where if printer is on 2.4 and device is on 5 then printing won't work.

One other thing can you hard wire the printer? That will at least stop the 2.4/5 issue.

Since the problem started I replaced one of the printers with a new and different Canon printer.  Installed the new one as you described and still get the same problem.  The connection problem surfaces when our iPhone, iPad, and Samsung S7 attempts to use the printers.  The printers always work well over the Wi-fi from a laptop and a desk top computer.  Again, once I restart the network on the devices, the printers become connected and will work flawlessly until you stop printing from those 3 devices.

I subscribed to FIOS when a salesman knocked on my door several years ago and have been satisfied with my service until now.  When he sold me this deal, I was told that in order to keep my pricing that I needed to call prior to expiration (every 2 years to renew) and as long as I pay my bill on time that I will continue to receive the same price.  I have been doing just this and have never had issue until this year...

I received an email from Michael L. Cingari (Executive Director, Customer Loyalty) who wrote the below:

"We are writing to notify you that your current service agreement is scheduled to end soon and your rate may increase.  The good news is it doesn't have to".

I checked online and called a representative who informed me that my rate is under market and must be increased $62 per month.  Read the below again Verizon FIOS:

The good news is it doesn't have to

**bleep**!  This is unacceptable.  I once was a valued loyal customer.  What happened?  I shall be shopping around for other providers.  What a shame!

"Do you plug the ORBI router into an Ethernet port or is the whole setup kept as wireless? (I'm hoping it's using an Ethernet port since I doubt that the G1100's AC1750 wireless capability could keep up with/drive the ORBI's AC3000 wireless.)"

I have the FiOS ethernet and cable plugged into the back of the Quantum G1100 with an ethernet cable between the G1100 and the Orbi RBR50... Orbi is providing me with WiFi throughout house.

Re: Amazon video streaming my TY states "insufficient bandwidth" and fails to stream

I had the same problem and managed to fix it.

The problem:  Amazon prime video stream does not work on my smart DVD wifi.  It reports insufficient bandwidth.  It used to work.  Nothing in the equipment configuration changed.  Netflix streaming does work.

My fix:  I changed my plan from 50/50 FIOS to 75/75 FIOS ($2 less expensive per month for the new plan for the next two years)  Verizon sent me a new settop box for the higher bandwidth.  After replacing the former STB with the new one, Amazon prime video now works just fine.

Note:  Some forum comments suggest that going to the new plan did not work for them.

Although the new STB solved my problem, there may be other factors.  For example, Verizon is not required to be network neutral anymore.  When I watched Amazon Prime video successfully on old equipment, Verizon was network neutral.  When the old equipment no longer worked for me, Verizon was not network neutral.  So this could account for the problem, but I have no factual confirmation that this is the case.  There may be other factors.  If you upgrade to 75/75, you may still not succeed in getting Amazon Prime video to work successfully.

The problem is not dealing with “loyalty “ there is no such thing in business.

a consumer looks for the best value for the money. Prices do and have increased.

What then happens is consumer choice. If you contact cable internet, tv & phone you will get a teaser rate for two years from them. So now it’s either put up with such a high increase or call Verizon after you get the other service and say cancel service.

Verizon retention’s may give you a lower rate. But remember make sure you have gotten a confirmed install date from cable. You may get lucky and get a better price.

by the way do month to month and no contracts, nor use auto pay

I use Apple products like iPhone’s and iPads and I do have a google nexus tablet and many other devices that use air play. Nothing at our home is direct usb connected.

on the Apple devices I would go into the WiFi settings and select all your known networks and select forget to wipe out the SSID from the devices.

then turn each phone and tablet off and back on.

select the proper WiFi SSID and connect. This may hold and your issue will be solved.

i know sometimes it is lost when I look for my printers. But I swipe down and it refreshes.

As a last resort you could go into the router settings and set the printers on their own IP address

Do you have any recommendations  for routers? Im basically in the same boat.... thanks for sharing your knowledge.

If you have ethernet from ont(main fios box) to you actiontec and don't have TV service I would consider getting your own non verizon router. Not only is the wifi bad on the quantum router but people report lots of otherpl problems like VPN, port forwarding and gaming issues.

No. They were offering 150/150 mbps before the Gateway router even came out. So sometimes you might just get an inexperienced person on the phone but you definitely don't need a Gateway to get 100 mbps.

When terminating internet only service, no one informed me the charges aren't prorated

I've had verizon for years.  For the last two I have only had internet.  The cost jumped to $75/month, which in my opnion is outrageous.  I couldn't get a deal because I wasn't a new customer (some day companies may begin to value their CURRENT customers and not play games like this).  So I terminated my service.  My billing period was 8/3-9/2.  I terminated 8/13.  Apparently the disconnection didn't happen until the 16th.  When I called to terminate, I was NOT told that when you only have internet, that the monthly fee is not prorated.  If I had been told that, I would have waited until 9/2 to terminate service.  Instead, I was charged for a service that I terminated.  I also returned the router mid-month, but apparently even that isn't prorated (if you've terminated service).  It is prorated if you're a current customer and return the router because of buying your own).

I learned all this when I called to see when my refund would be processed.  I asked where that was stated, and was told that I could find it in the terms of service.  What is very disturbing is the fact it was not disclosed at the time of termination.  If the representative is prohibited from telling customers that, then they should refer the customer to read the terms of service to undertstand how the billing for internet services is handled upon termination.

I am very happy (and always have been) with the quality of FIOS service (I am now back with Verizon), but I am VERY unhappy to have been deceived like this.  Although it is only about $43 or so that I believe I am entitled to be refunded, it is MY hard-earned money, not Verizon's.  God knows they have more money than me.  I really don't understand why termination of internet service is handled any differently that TV or phone.  I am sure I'm not the only customer to have learned this the hard way.  Please explain where exactly this is stated in the terms of service, and the reasoning behind it.

Thank you.

It all depends...if you have dead spots in you house you could try Google wifi or Netgear orbi. They are a mesh network.

If your Actiontec router covers the house they have Netgear, Asus, and TP Link all sure good models. You just want to look for dual band/tri band and Wireless AC and you'll be in good shape.

Also when connecting to wifi. 5ghz will give you better speed but less range. 2.4ghz(Actiontec rev I only has this) will give lower speeds but can go farther from router.

Gigabit questions before I commit to return to FIOS

I used to have FIOS until Verizon spiked my monthly charge without notice in 2016 and wouldn’t offer a discount until I went with my local cable company. It was too late when they offered a price that I would have stayed.  Being away from FIOS for about two years, I do have some questions primarily with their Gigabit offering.   I used to have the 75/75 speed.

From what I understand, Gigabit requires Ethernet, but I only have a cable connection to where I want to use the G1100 (which I still have) for Gigabit internet.  Will I need to tell Verizon that they need to change my wiring to add Ethernet, where there was just coax before?  Is this considered part of the standard setup?

Are there any problems with using a non-Verizon VPN, i.e. NORDVPN?

I'll be using an Orbi system for WIFI and I will connect it to the G1100 (wifi shutdown) and use the Orbi in AP mode.  Is it possible to have a DD-WRT or Open WRT device in between the FIOS router and the Orbi?  I would shut down wireless on everything but the Orbi, and use the WRT device for whole house VPN capability and an enhanced firewall.   I know I will need to ensure the routers all have different IP addresses.

Are there any issues with using a Dynamic DNS service like No-IP-DDNS with FIOS?

Anyone experiencing issues with any streaming service, especially NHL.TV and MLB.TV?  At one point, Verizon was throttling bandwidth at the Tier 1 and 2 interchanges with content providers.  I saw the impact on MLB.TV?  Are there any recent experience with Verizon causing issues with throttling bandwidth from certain content providers?

Thanks in advance.

This happened to me about two years ago.  I had FIOS for over five years at a decent price, and then they bumped me up by about $70.   No amount of threating to leave would convince them I was serious.   So I went to my local cable ccompany (Cox) and saved around $55 off what FIOS wanted.   About two months in (so Cox's 30 day satisfaction period was over), I get an email from FIOS with a price that I would have stayed.  I am coming up on expiration of my contract with Cox, and Cox won't match what FIOS is currently offerring me as a new customer.  I have to be off Cox for 90 days to get their promotional rate which is $80 cheaper than I am paying today.   So I am probably going to make a switch back to FIOS.   And I fully expect in the future to be switching back to Cox, when FIOS jacks up their rate after 24 months and Cox has an introductory offer.   It's a pain to make the switch, but for almost $2,000 over 24 months, it is worth it.  These companies have never figured out that it is much cheaper to keep an existing customer, than to replace a customer.

I'm connecting to the wireless printer via IP, not directly so it shouldnt matter which band I'm on.

I use the standard fios quantum gateway router.  So it's the same subnet.

But like I said, if the laptop is on the same IPS (the 2.4 GHz one) as the printer, I can ping the pritner's static IP.   If I log the laptop into the 5 GHz IPS, I can no longer ping the priter IP

Which version of MoCA do I have?

I have the black ONT & the Actiontec router.

Which version of MoCA do I have?

I'm thinking about cutting the cord. I noticed that Verizon offers internet only. I'm thinking about replacing the FIOS box with a Tivo box but the Tivo requires a CableCard. Do you know how much that costs? If I understand it correctly, the CableCard will allow me to watch the same FIOS channels on the Tivo box as on the FIOS box, right? But if I choose to not watch any FIOS channels at all but only stream, do I still need the CableCard?

P.S. Lately, I've been getting a lot of "Authentication failed. Authentication ticket mismatched, failed authentication".  The other day, the message came up at the same time that I clicked on "Post". I was mad. I had to start all over again. Just to make sure that I didn't have to type the message a 3rd time, I typed it into a text file & saved it on the desktop. Then I copied & pasted into the post. I hope that the powers-that-be at Verizon are aware of the problem & correct it.

Just recently had fios installed a week ago. I'm paying for gigabit speeds but every speedtest i ran is only giving me half of that.

1. I'm hardwired from the router into my pc.

2. CAT5-E cable is being used

3. My Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is gigabit capable after checking the adapter properties

4. I restarted the router as well as my pc to no avail

5. I spoke with tech support last night for about 45 minutes which resulted in the rep contacting the networking department and confirming that they will be running a diagnostic on my network over the course of 24 hours and that he'll contact me this evening.

The ONT is MOCA 1.1 and the Actiontec Rev I with red band is 2.0. The ONT on MOCA 1.1 is why you can only do 100 mbps on coax. Anything above requires ethernet to the router.

If you get a cable card they are probably less than $10. You would plug that into TiVo and get all the channels you get with FiOS STB. Only difference is that with TiVo you will be using their interface. Now that TiVo uses MOCA it will communicate with the Actiontec just like any Verizon STB would.

If you stream you will not need a cable card  just internet. You will just need to subscribe to different providers like Netflix and/or Sling TV.
