The Simple Answer(TM) is "You want speed and reliability, go wired. You want convenience, go wireless." Pick your poison accordingly.

My indoor RF buddy has told me that unlicensed AP radios have to stop all traffic to do a listen sweep every 2 minutes or so in order to comply with an FCC mandate.

Never heard that one before, but 802.11 wifi I'd argue is half-duplex communication. Reason is the 802.11 spec uses a method called
CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance) to check when each node can transmit. Wired ethernet also includes a
similar method called CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection), but that's only for backwards compatibility reasons
-- everything running on wired ethernet has been full duplex for 20+ years now.

Dumb Question(TM), but just how many 802.11 based hosts total do you have in your house? Be aware that the more 802.11 hosts
you got, the longer the CSMA/CA timers may run -- back to the half duplex nature of wifi I mentioned, imagine how well a long conversation
goes in a room of 4+ people, and only 1 person can talk at a time, and everyone fighting for a "slot" to start their piece of the conversation.

"DFS Channel Availability Check
When support for DFS is enabled, it will be necessary for WiFi access points to verify that any radar in proximity is not using DFS frequencies. This process is called Channel Availability Check, and it’s executed during the boot process of an access point (AP) as well as during its normal operations.

If the AP detects that a radar is using a particular DFS channel, then it will exclude that channel from the list of available channels. This state will last for 30 minutes, after which the AP will check again if the channel can be used for WiFi transmissions.

The Channel Availability Check performed during the boot process can take anywhere between 1 and 10 minutes, depending on which country you’re in. For this reason, DFS channels are not immediately available when an AP boots.

As I just wrote, if the AP detects during the boot process that a DFS channel is currently used by a radar, it will mark it as non-available and exclude it from the list of available channels. This process will have little impact on the WiFi clients.

However, if an AP detects, during normal operations, that a radar is using a particular channel that is currently in use, then it may communicate to associated WiFi clients to stop transmitting on that channel. (Please be aware that not all AP vendors may announce a channel change to clients.) The AP will then switch to another available DFS channel within the Channel Move Time, which is generally set to 10 seconds. This behavior will cause connected WiFi clients to be disconnected from the network for a period of time before re-connecting to a different channel.

It’s very important to keep this behavior in mind when enabling the DFS function. WiFi networks that are servicing real-time and mission-critical applications may want to avoid such disconnections caused by DFS frequencies."

Have you tried to contact support (I800Verizon or twitter @verizonsupport) to see if they can provide service?

Do you have Verizon phone (not cell) service?

I have heard that sometimes ordering phone service can get things rolling to start FIOS (they don't want to run copper)

Is that PC on the same subnet as the others?

Is the extender a wireless extender?

Are you doing filtering by MAC address or IP?

If it is by MAC, then fios router may not be able to see MAC of PC when it is connected to extender.

Has this been resolved?  I am getting the same message today...

There is nothing to be resolved. The Verizon router login page is now HTTPS and Verizon uses a self-signed certificate. The self-signed certificate is not registered with the Certificate Authority (CA) so you browser is telling you the site is unsafe. Many devices like routers, access points, and NAS hard drives have self-signed certificates and will give you this error. It is safe however to proceed as they are devices on your local network.

Re: Bridge G1100 So Your Router Becomes Primary

Jrmonta,

I am new to this thread and was going to try your solution later, but am confused by one thing. What does this mean: " Disconnect G1100 from ONT and connect to LAN port via ethernet to change settings so that it is no longer a router and is only a Moca bridge." Does that mean disconnecting both the WAN and coax cable from the G1100 and then running the ethernet cable from the ONT into the LAN port on the G1100?

Connect ont to modem/router combo?

Hi, all

seems like fios set up ont to a wireless router via Ethernet, I am trying to determine if I can use my old arris sbg6580-g228 modem/router, which only has coax port.

my question is

1. can ont connect to modem/router, OR just a router?

2. Can ont connect to my arris via coax? Or I should just shell out to buy new router?

I feel 1 is router only, and 2 a new router. But want to ask first here. Please let me know.

Slow internet? Help!

I'm confused about this. Help..

I've moved back in with my mother and found out she has Verizon DSL and is paying $70/$80 a month for about 5mbps! Wew! I thought she already had Verizon Fios but apparently not with THAT speed?? That must be DSL (right?)

I'd definitely like to get her faster internet. I'm not sure if the DSL can go faster but clearly Fios advertises faster internet options for roughly the same monthly price.

My mother mentioned talking to a local cable company about getting cable internet to the house, and was told she'd have to pay $16,000 for them to put in a new conduit as the current none "does not have enough space for it".

I honestly do not know if this 'cable' she mentioned was Verizon or a competitor. I'm curious though if this would apply to Verizon fios if not. Can she get Verizon Fios or will a new line through a new conduit likely needing to be put down...?

No. That is a DOCSIS modem and will only work with the cable company. You will have to buy a router. FiOS doesn't use modems

It sounds like she probably has DSL. Verizon initially offered 5/2, but that was many years ago. Easiest way to tell is to look at the router. If it has a phone line connected to it then it's DSL. If ethernet or coax then it's FiOS.  What is the model number on the router?

Verizon doesn't charge to bring the fiber to the house. That sounds like the Cable company. If you house has a long driveway they have to run a bigger cable and charge to do the work.

What are you streaming on? Is it hardwired or wifi? If on wifi it might have a bad wifi signal.

Service disconnected prematurely

I’ll be moving soon, so about an hour ago I went into my Fios online profile to submit an order to change my Fios internet service to the new address. The earliest date I could secure was 2/5, so I set the deactivation date at my current address for 2/4. No sooner had I closed the app my service was disconnected and WILL NOT come back on even after reboots and unplugging. On top of that, it’s after midnight and there are no Fios representatives avail to troubleshoot this. First of all, how does a company this large not have 24 hour technical assistance?! My bill covers 24 hour periods, not 9-5. Now I have to wait for a morning call back and I already have a feeling that’s going to be a long drawn out experience I do NOT have time for. I’m **bleep**

Like other poster said could be bad wifi signal. Verizon routers are basically junk in the wifi area. A newer better router by Netgear or Asus with external antennas would be better. Also distance from the wifi signal can impact the connection.

two cell phones and another device should not be an issue even on wifi. If your using a hardwire connection then I would guess its a faulty router, then calling 1-800-VERIZON will get you another one.

if it’s recycling as you claim it could also be a loose connection either at the router, or even at the ONT. Both should be checked. Sometimes the ethernet cabling could be crimped or even damaged which could also cause that issue.

Google WiFi Mesh & Verizon Fios Issue

$
0
0

Let me start this off by saying that I have been using this setup for almost 2 years now without issue. I have Verizon Fios gigabit service with a Fios Quantum Gateway router. I also have the Google WiFi mesh system with 3 access points total. I have the main AP connected to the port 1 on my Fios router. I also have the ONT out of the wall going to my WAN port and then have the coax cable.

So, again, I haven't had ANY issues for the past 2 years up until 5 days ago. Fios must've been putting out an update because my fios one box was blinking green and seemed stuck on the update. After talking with fios early that next morning it went back to white, but the other box I have is still blinking green (who knows why, but TV works, DVR works, etc). That's when all my issues started with the internet.

After talking to Fios for 4 days them trying to do all these troubleshooting issues and saying it's fixed and then it's actually not is quite annoying. The internet issue I am facing is spotty internet where it'll be fine for hours and then drop for a minute or two and then come back, but when you work from home internet is very important.

Yesterday, I decided after Fios says everything was good on their side to contact Google WiFi support. The guy was very helpful and said the issue from the logs he can see that I am facing is I am having a double NAT or multiple networks. Your Google Wifi signal channels and the WiFi from Verizon is interfering reason why your network is dropping.

He asked me to contact Verizon and have them walk me through how to my Fios router in bridge mode, which they did no issue took a few minutes. I thought I was good the fios router globe was red (I assumed this was due to bridge mode) and then the wifi symbol below was lit up and white. Thought I was good because I have all my devices (10 of them currently) connected to my google WiFi setup.

Well... it did not go well and my internet was going offline constantly over a 5 hour span once this new setup was complete. Google support had no clue what the issue was, Fios says they had no clue either so I had to reset (hit the button on the back) my router and it went back to normal, no bridge mode, etc.

Everything is back up and running, but the internet is still spotty like my guess is there is still interference between the two which causes the WiFi to drop for a bit and come back. I don't know how to fix this or what I should do. I could completely get rid of the google system, but I have it actually so I can get wifi in places of my house where fios couldn't reach including my ring cameras outside my garage.

What's weird is I check my speeds via the google wifi system and I get 653 average download and 786 average upload, which seems awesome, right? I downloaded the speedtest app and ran it over my wifi when connected to google and then ran it over LTE today and over WiFi I got 41.8 download and 38.2 upload and then over LTE I got 108 download and 4.90 upload....I don't know why the numbers are so off or why my internet has been tanking all of a sudden after being good for 2 years.

Anyone have any ideas, advice, I am 100% open to anything at this point. Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance!
