FIOS Quanum Gateway Router Weaker after Service Upgrade

A week ago we upgraded from 100mb service to 200mb.  Since then our gateway router does not have the 5ghz option any more, only 2ghz.  Before the switch the gateway was getting around 75-80 mbps on a speed test from our tablet.  We also have a Gryphon router connected to it via an Ethernet cable.  That was getting 90mbps.  Now with the upgrade, both routers are testing around 110mb.  It takes 2 tests as well.  The first test is always down around 70mb, the second increases it to 110.  I have powered cycled the router and it did not help any.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

If you are connecting to the 2.4 GHz band then 75-80 mbps is about right. You will have to connect to the 5 GHz band to get higher wifi speeds. If you don't see 5G anymore then check and see if SON is enabled.

Login to the router at 192.168.1.1 or myfiosgateway.com and go to Wireless Settings/Advanced Security Settings/ Other Advanced Wireless Options/Self-Organizing Network Enabled and set to Off. You can also try turning SON off via the My FiOS App.

You can just login and disable it by going to 192.168.1.1 or myfiosgateway.com and going to Wireless Settings/Advanced Security Settings/ Other Advanced Wireless Options/Self-Organizing Network Enabled and set to Off

Yeah I’m not sure either. You never want to wifi access points in that close proximity. Glad to hear that it’s working.

Where did you go to remove the space? through the myfiosgateway.com portal I can see the passwords appear correct but cannot find anywhere to change it or re-enter it just to be safe.

Wifi Extender question

I just signed up for fios 980/880 ( or something similar) . The speeds by wifi aren't even close to that.  Was thinking of getting a wifi extender but didn't want to pay 199.00 for the wifi extender verizon is selling.

I have the newest router the Tri-band Wi-Fi 6 router.

Can I just buy any extended off of amazon or am I stuck buying verizons?

thanks for any help

Unless you are using a device that is Wifi 6(ax), then you aren't going to get wifi speed near a gig. I get about 400 with a laptop that's wifi 5(ac)

Yes can get any extender you want be you will need to wire it with ethernet. If you get the Verizon one you can utilize the coax in your house.

Also keep in mind a gigabit connection is way overkill for most applications. The gig speed is for bandwidth sharing between multiple users. Not really about one device getting a gig. For example, you only need 25 mbps to stream 4k.

Cannot connect to Google or other Google products but can ping to the sites

Hi,

I discovered this issue yesterday morning when I tried to search for something on Google and displayed "Can't connect" message. Gmail and other websites have been working fine except google.com. I tried restarting my router and it worked fine for a few moments. After that, google.com worked fine but it was Google Photos that cannot connect to. I tried restarting my router one more time, this time was YouTube that was not working correctly (all of the video thumbnails were not shown). I tried to restart the router one last time, and it went back to google.com not working.

I tried ping google.com in the command line and it pinged successfully. However, I cannot connect to the site in the browser. Neither on Windows 10, nor on Mac, nor on iPhone (that's all the devices I own). I also tested on different browsers, the results were the same.

Can someone help me solve this issue, and why does it only affect Google-owned sites?

Thanks,

Robby

I am having the same issue. Verizon appears to be having some sort of DNS issue. I noticed it wasn't resolving caching sites for YouTube thumbnails, but it also intermittently affected other websites where I couldn't connect. Resetting the router fixed the issue temporarily, but it would always return. Also releasing/renewing IPv6 address also fixed the problem temporarily. This is not a router/local network/local device issue.

It seemed like they just performed a reset at my place without any sort of request (router reset and STBs lost all connection). I will let you know if that fixes it.

--Edit--

After posting about the reset I had the same issue and couldn't connect back to this site.

They are having major DNS issues. I am experiencing the same problem and it appears many others on the forum are as well. Unable to resolve certain sites intermittently while others work fully.

My house is really big and I don't need any extenders anymore with this router.

FYI - One PC in the house (furthest from the router) was slow at first until we updated the firmware on the computer's wifi card. The result is blazing fast!!!

How big is your house? Floors? Sq Ft?

There might be an issue with your local  Verizon DNS server. Login to your router and change the DNS to Google’s and see if that helps.

I had a tech reset my ONT by contacting support and that seems to have fixed the issue I was seeing. I will report back if that didn't fix the problem.

Disabling QoS on the router fixed the problem.  It was apparently prioritizing wireless connections over wired connections.

I hate routers with training wheels attached that you can't take off.

The issue is persisting even after ONT reset.

Try the DNS change and see if that helps. They are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

I have tried multiple DNS servers and it's the same issue. Different sites will all of a sudden fail to resolve even after router/DHCP/ONT reset. Everything else will function as normal.

After my latest chat with support I was told to replace the router, even though I have a hard time believing an intermittent issue like this is due to the router.
