Re: TIA568A or 568B?

I doubt anyone here knows if Verizon techs are mandated to use 568A or 568B or allowed to pick whatever makes sense for a particular install.  Use the pictures Smith posted to try and figure it out - look for green or orange on outside connector and then you'll know.

Also, buy a cheap cable tester.  That will let you verify correct wiring.  You can find them for under $20 online.

Good Luck.

Fios router won't allow google.com to appear in any browser

Every so often I cannot access any google site. I just get a "site is unreachable" page instead. This happens on all our devices, iMac, MacBook, iphones, etc, and in all browsers (tried chrome, firefox, brave, opera). If I try to access google using a cellular connection, everything works as it should. So the problem seems to be with fios, not mac, as far as I can tell. If I reset the fios router, the problem goes away for a spell. The same thing happened a few months ago, Verizon swapped my router and the problem disappeared.

It seems to be fired and WiFi....it’s really annoying AF!   But I’ll try anything at this point!

Instead of rebooting router, log in to it and try to renew wan ip.

Or do a release and get new IP.

Sometimes a certain network can have an issue.

How are you testing?

Are you using a hardwired device and going to speedtest.verizon.net?

That is the only speed Verizon will guarantee.

I have also seen posts where people state that either their NIC is not 1G capable or needs updated drivers to get higher speeds.

If you have an android device, start with an app called wifi analyzer.

It can help you determine if you have a signal strength issue.

Or could possibly just need to change the wifi channel to avoid interference.

In an apt building, there may be lots of other wifi causing interference.

Which FiOS Gateway do you use? Is it a "G1100" or a "G3100" router? How many square footage is the apartment? Is the router shoved into a cabinet or under a bed, or behind a TV, or something of the sort?

I do second the WiFi Analyzer. If you don't have an Android phone, you can also use an app called "WiFi Analyzer" from the Microsoft Store, which does the same job. Macs have a built-in utility called WiFi Diagnostics, which, if you launch and open the Utilities menu, it also has a WiFi Scanning and channel recommendation tool.

When using a WiFi Analyzer, a signal will be displayed in the negatives range. A number below -72dB is regarded as usable but weak. -80dB and lower is very weak. Also, remember that the 5Ghz WiFi will reach less bit often performs better.

High Speed Internet is available at my address, it it possible to get FiOS?

I am currently not a Verizon customer, but I was a long time ago when DSL first became available. I upgraded to Comcast internet when it became available which was before FiOS came out. I'm looking for better internet but the only other option at my address is HSI from Verizon, which isn't very fast. Since FiOS is available in other areas of my city, I was wondering if I could get FiOS directly installed at my address or through the upgrade program Verizon offers.

FiOS requires the installation of physical infrastructure in your area. Fiber lines, instead of Copper Telephone lines (what DSL runs over). Unless you know of any neighbors having FiOS, it may not actually be available for you to order, and no upgrade program Verizon could offer over the phone will get you FiOS. One program that is happening in many areas with FiOS is a copper retirement program, where Verizon is decommissioning copper, as it is getting expensive to maintain and not competing well compared to other services. As they decommission the copper, they lay down Fiber which can be used for FiOS and 5G services.

Check here, on a state by state basis, for any copper retirement notices for your area. They typically list the retirements by the city your central office is in: https://www.verizon.com/about/terms-conditions/network-disclosures

One note, once FiOS is available, Verizon will stop selling DSL services. Their website will explicitly show FiOS when you check for service availability.

Was your Antivirus enabled while performing the scan? That can impact your test results as Anti-virus often scans inbound and outbound network traffic for malware. This is very processor intensive.

The other part is your browser. Some speed tests are limited by your browser, since some speed tests have to write to your disk as part of testing download speeds. Upload speed testing is also processor intensive, since speed tests are designed to generate data that cannot be compressed, so it gives an accurate result. Try the Ookla speed test app from the Microsoft Store or Apple App Store, as it can help rule out your browser.

Try the Verizon speed test, and if you have a Verizon router like the G1100 or the G3100, make sure it is plugged in first before running your speed test on Verizon's site. Pay attention to what you see for the "Router" Speed test result. This helps to prove whether or not the problem is with your computer, or with your connection as a whole.

Next time this happens, open Terminal on your Mac and try pinging Google.com from it. The process is pretty simple. Go to Finder -> Applications -> Utilities and open Terminal. In Terminal, type "ping www.google.com" and see if you are getting any replies back. Press Control + C to stop the command to get your final ping result.

Did these problems start before or after getting a new router? Your initial post suggests you were trying to upgrade to solve the problem. If you're still having outages with a new router, then we need to look at your environment. For example, is your router connected to the ONT (big Verizon box) by Coax, Ethernet (CAT5e) or both? What model ONT do you have? What do the lights on the router do or show when your connection drops? How often are the disconnects?

New FiOS installs, and any FiOS installation of 100Mbps and above use Ethernet for the WAN. In some cases, 100Mbps can be used with Coax, but Verizon is bumping this plan to 200Mbps or more in some areas and Coax won't do that well.

For dropouts, always test using Ethernet first to make sure the drop-outs are not occurring from there. If Ethernet is fine but Wi-Fi is acting up, start off by disabling the SON feature of your FiOS router. This disables the Access Point Steering and Band Steering features, as not all devices play well with these features. The other element you may want to do is set your router to fixed Wireless channels, in case it is changing channels on you for interference mitigation. Use channels 1, 6, and 11 for 2.4Ghz. Avoid DFS channels for 5Ghz unless you're 100% sure all of your devices support DFS, or you don't mind shoving the non-support devices onto 2.4Ghz Wireless.

One note: If you disable SON, your router will create a separate network for the 5Ghz radio to be used by devices. The name will still be named after your normal network name, but with _5G tacked onto the end. Connect your devices to this name for the best performance.

Is your Internet connection provided by Coax or Ethernet from the ONT? Do you have FiOS TV or phone service?

Thanks for the reply.

I realized I had a typo in my initial post. My current plan is 100 Mbps. I tried disabling the SON feature before but it didn't seem to work out as one of the two channels that I was expecting disappeared. I did mess around with the channels but I'll go back with your suggestions. Though I still have my old Verizon router I own, is it possible to swap that in to troubleshoot whether it is indeed some flaw in the new router?

I actually hope the FiOS in a Box plan works out. That seems creative and cool at the same time. In the future, maybe Verizon can come up with a way that would allow them to let able customers install their own ONT. I know for myself, I'd love to toss the ONT into my network rack, and I have the know-how for grounding it, wiring up telephone and TV, etc.

I know some other ISPs, especially wireless, have been doing similar. They still come over to install the Antennas and run the cabling outside. But once done outside, they drill a hole through the house where it's safe, and hand the customer the needed cables then seal it all back up. All the customer has to do is plug in the gear and power it up. Then the tech does QA remotely using their computers, and a video call with the customer if possible.

At one point, Verizon was toying with sending out a G1100-like router with a built-in ONT, the G2100. That was also coinciding with some reports of IPTV trials. Maybe it'll come back off the shelf and show up in production someday. I just hope there is still the option for separate ONT if it does happen, so there isn't the concern of "forced router which might be buggy"

Yes, it's possible. To swap between routers, perform a "DHCP Release" on your WAN connection IP before you try to hook up the other router. Otherwise it won't get an IP address. Do the same thing when swapping back to your G3100.

So the disappearing channel issue happens when you have both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks named the same (as it would be with SON) or, if the router is on a DFS Channel and your device has no support for DFS channels. To restore 5Ghz visibility, use a channel between 36-48, or 149-161. If you see channel 165 as an option, avoid using it unless your device supports that channel, and because 165 is limited to 20Mhz operation not 80Mhz.

Upgrading Router Issue

Hi there,

I recently bought a new Fios Home router to replace a much older MI424WR unit. When I attempted to setup the new router, it would not register there was a coax internet connection, and hence no internet. It worked fine when I plugged the old unit back in. I recently upgraded my plan and purchased the new router, the ‘effective date’ of the order isnt for a couple of days but I have already noticed an increase in speed. Is it an issue with not registering the new change in hardware with verizon? Or the billing order not going through yet? Something else?

Many thanks,

Tom

ONT model needed for Gigabit service

Which model(s) of ONT box is needed for Gigabit service. I currently have an ONT model I-211M-L. It is connected to the router via an Ethernet cable. Is this ONT capable of gigbit service? If not, what speed can this model provide.
